50 year celebration
Unique 50 year celebration during Moura’s Festival Weekend
Moura celebrates 50 years of being Australia’s first international exporter of coal, through the strong Japanese – Australian business commitment of the Mitsui Company as the co-owner of Moura’s local mine from 1959 to the present. In August 1961, Australia’s first shipment of Moura coal was delivered to the Nippon Steel Corporation on the ‘Meian Maru’. As a tribute to Mitsui’s ongoing dedication to the Moura community and to recognise the past 50 years of generations linked to the mine, the traditional Japanese ‘Toro Nagashi’ lantern ceremony will be performed at dusk on Saturday 17th September on the Dawson River.
Moura’s weekend is also based around the unique sporting competition of night skiing.
The Ski Club will conduct their Night Skiing Competition on Saturday 17th September and are to run a day competition on Sunday 18th.
Other Moura events include:
- Golf Club competition Friday 16th September
- Maddog Triathlon Club’s River Run Saturday 17th
- Garden Lovers Club’s Agriculture, Local Mine and Historical Bus Tours
- SES River Rescue display
- Scouts River Raft Building Competition
